Getting Involved! – Local Races and Events

For many riders that are new to the sport or just new to a different area…you are going to try to find a way to get involved and meet other riders. Local events and races are the perfect way to get involved and meet people in the community.

This is a vast resource that I have not gotten fully involved with until the past year and a half. During this time, my riding group has drastically increased and my skill level has grown with this expansion. Mountain biking races and events will get you closer to riders with similar interests.

Why should you get involved?

  • You meet riders that enjoy the same kind of rides you do – Go to events that peak your riding interest. Is there a local cross country race, endurance race or festival that looks like it is right up your alley? Get the information and go! The mountain biking community is as good as it gets.
  • You will get to see something new – No one wants to do and see the same mountain biking trails all of the time. Part of the fun of the sport of mountain biking is riding new places and expanding your horizons. Festivals and races allow mountain bikers to see new things in a group atmosphere that is inviting. Meet up with other mountain bikers and ride a trail that you have never been on. Check out this post on trying new trails.
  • Challenging Yourself – Races and festivals bring a new challenge to your mountain biking abilities. They put you, as a rider, in a situation where you want to be better and you want to expand your riding capabilities. More on challenging yourself…

What should a first time racer know?

When you attend or participate in your first mountain biking race, there are several things you should know.

  1. Classes – There are multiple classes for every riding ability. Do not worry about the pro’s…they are in a class all by themselves! Get out there and do your best with riders in your skill level. As you get better, you can move up classes, but do not let your perception of your riding abilities keep you from getting involved.
  2. Results – Do not expect to be perfect your first time out. Racing is a completely different mindset and it takes a different approach than your regular weekend mountain biking. Do not get discouraged and enjoy the event for the experience.
  3. Pace Yourself During Practice – Do not get out there and blow everything you have during practice. Pace yourself to be ready for the main event.

Where do I find local events and races?

  • Local Trailheads – Ask your local riders. Chances are they will know when the next race or festival is, but at the very least…they can point you in the right direction to look. In many cases, your local trailhead probably has literature posted that you can check out.
  • Local Forum Sites – Just about every area of the country has their own local forum site. If they don’t…head over to MTBR.com and take a look at their state specific forums.

This Past Weekend…

I thought I would share some pictures from this past weekend. We had a local downhill race at Carter’s Lake. This was the last race in the three race series. I am the one with the Troy Lee Designs flame helmet. Enjoy the shots and get out there and get involved in a local mountain biking event of your own!
