Cane Creek DB Air

First Look: Cane Creek DB Air Rear MTB Shock

Cane Creek DB Air Cutaway

The Cane Creek DB Air has been a long time coming. Built off the success of the Cane Creek Double Barrel coil shock with Ohlins technology built in, the DB Air from the Cane Creek camp looks to bring that same performance in a lightweight package. The Double Barrel has been a favorite of Bike198 since the beginning. With its twin tube technology that features independently adjustable circuits, mountain bikers can completely tune the shock to their specific preference and suspension curves. From the looks of it, this DB Air from Cane Creek is going to deliver that same type of adjustability and performance.

While it may seem simple to just port the coil technology over to an air spring, the final product on the DB Air took a little over 2 years to develop into a product that Cane Creek felt was ready for market. At 500g for the typical DB Air, the air counterpart is roughly 200g lighter than the coil DB. The idea was to bring the same technology found in the coil to bikes in the 140mm rear travel range. While you could get a coil version for these shock sizes, riders in this travel range are typically looking for a lighter setup for their mountain bikes which ruled out the use of coil suspension components.

For those that are familiar with the coil Double Barrel, you will recognize the independently adjustable  high speed compression, low speed compression, high speed rebound and low speed rebound adjustment knobs directly above the piggy back. This particular piggy back is also able to rotate to accommodate different frame designs.

The goal of the DB Air was to bring a high end air shock to the mass market that performed at a level we are used to out of the coil Double Barrel. With the ability to specifically tune all aspects of the shocks performance, you can really tailor this air spring to your bike’s specific suspension curve and riding characteristics on the fly. With all of the different suspension and frame designs out there, this should be an interesting product moving forward and we are looking forward to getting our first rides in on the new design.
