Building Dirt Jumps – Big Creek Work Party

2 min read

This past Saturday, I gave up some precious spin time in favor of a work party at our local trail. Work parties are a great way to give back to the mountain biking community and show your local governments how much support the mountain biking community actually has.

Big Creek Dirt Jump Work Party

For this work party, we needed to rebuild the dirt jumps at the top of Big Creek. With the increasing popularity of beginners trying out bigger stunts in our area, the increased traffic had worn down the dirt jumps that had basically gone untouched for a long time. The 50 gallon drums that provided the previous support were caving in, so it was time to tear those out and start over with fresh Georgia red clay.

Luckily, the homeowner that backs up to the city property needed to get rid of a crap load of dirt from her backyard and she was willing to let us sponge off her water to get it out of there. So…we came armed with an extremely long water hose, about 20 workers and a bobcat ready to build some jumps. With that amount of man power, easy access to fresh dirt and a bobcat, we were able to turn a months worth of building into two days.

As you can see by the pictures taken by Chad Oliver below…the result has me stoked to build the DJ bike back up. If you want to get used to air time, starting with small dirt jumps and working your way up is one of the best ways to get better at your tires leaving the trail.

I founded Bike198 back in 2008 and started riding bikes seriously in 1994. A lot has changed since that time and one of the greatest releases is still getting out on the bike and shredding trail or tearing up the road.
